Document ID: c03925149 Advisory: HP ProLiant Servers: HP Smart Array Controllers - CUSTOMER ACTION REQUIRED to Reconnect All SAS Cables After a Service Event in Order to Avoid a '1789-Slot 0 Drive Array Disk Drive(s) Not Responding' Error Message and Possible Data Loss NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice. Last Updated: 2013-09-25 DESCRIPTION
After a service event has been performed on an HP ProLiant server configured with an HP Smart Array Controller configured for RAID, all of the SAS expander cables must be reconnected before restarting the server. If any cable is loose or disconnected, or was reconnected to a different port, RAID array logical drives could become unresponsive, degraded, or damaged, and error messages similar to the following may appear during Power-On Self-Test (POST) if the following action is not performed: During POST, the following screen will be displayed. After a service event, it is important to press a key when this screen appears, in order to view any Option ROM error messages and take the appropriate action before the Smart Array Controller default action is executed. Figure 1: POST Message Requiring a Key Press After a Service Event If a SAS cable connected to the HP Smart Array Controller or an HP SAS Expander is loose or disconnected, or was reconnected to a different port, the following error message will be displayed: 1789-Slot 0 Drive Array Disk Drive(s) Not Responding If the above message appears, the F1 key should be pressed immediately (Select 'F1' to continue - all logical drive(s) will remain disabled). If the F1 key is is NOT pressed within fifteen seconds, the 'F2' to fail drive(s) that are not responding - Interim Recovery default action will occur.
If the Select 'F2' to fail drive(s) that are not responding - Interim Recovery default is allowed to occur, and the server is then powered off and all of the SAS or SAS Expander cables are reconnected, the RAID array will still be unresponsive and degraded, and a message similar to the following will appear during POST after restarting the server: 1784-Slot 0 Drive Array - Logical Drive Failure However, if all hard drives are connected directly to the Smart Array Controller, the following error message will be displayed instead of the above 1784 error message: 1779-Slot 0 Drive Array - Replacement drive(s) detected OR previously failed,
Note: The port number included in the above messages may not be the actual Smart Array Controller port number that has a loose or disconnected SAS cable.
